Austin, TX New Year!

December 29, 2010

I was planning on a roadtrip to Nashville, TN for New Years but decided that may not be the best idea right now….for a number of reasons.  So what’s a TX girl to do to ring in the New Year? Umm….take a quick three hour journey to Austin, TX!! Some of my dearest friends live there and I think a low key holiday is just what I need at the moment.

{We Heart It}

I’m looking forward to hot cocoa, dressing up with my best friend from college, staying up entirely too late, sleeping in, thrifting, coffee with Carli and John, pretty music, yummy food and everything else in between.

I hope your Christmas and New Year’s have been amazing so far.  Nothing makes me happier than a holiday of good memories.  I’ll be back in a few days!

New Year’s Resolutions & Stuff

December 27, 2010

Here we go again.  This year I’ve decided to choose smaller goals for myself.  I usually make it a month into the new year before all hope is dashed for my pretty resolutions.  Maybe 2011 will be different.

1. Learn To Love The Beauty In Making French Press Coffee

{We Heart It}

I got the prettiest little french press for Christmas and can’t wait to start using it.  It may seem like a silly resolution but some of my favorite moments and conversations have happened under the influence of coffee.

2. Practice Photography & Editing On Something Other Than My iPhone

{We Heart It}

I do have a deep like and appreciation for my iPhone 3GS…let this be known.  However, I’ve ended up with quite the collection of beautiful vintage film and newer digital cameras that I should start using.  I’ve had lessons from several friends (and uh boyfriends) who are photographers but I won’t learn anything unless I practice and learn on my own.

3. Don’t Buy Any New Clothes At Full Price

{We Heart It}

I spend the majority of my paycheck on pretty dresses and other types of clothes.  This year I’ve decided to purchase more thrift and vintage items and learn to sew a bit.  I don’t want to pay full price for anything which is why my employee discount at UO will work purrfectly in this equation.

4. Journal Daily

{We Heart It}

I literally have piles of full journals that I’ve written in throughout the years.  It’s easy to let journaling pass by when you blog, twitter, instagram, facebook and everything in between.  Journaling is good for the soul so I’m trying to write every day, even if it’s only one sentence.  Yup.  Discipline.

5. Budget, Budget, Budget

{We Heart It}

Thankfully, I was able to pay off all my credit card debt before Christmas.  This was a huge blessing for sure.  Now that I’m 100% debt free I intend to stay that way but also continue to have fun.  It’s all about cash budget and that pesky envelope system….with a few tweaks of course.  I’m hoping to visit Ireland/Scotland within the next few months and need to start saving those pennies.

6. Blog With More Intention

{We Heart It}

I started this blog last April and I’ve loved the journey it’s already taken me on.  I’ve met some amazing people, been inspired creatively, learned more about myself, found a way to keep up with friends and family and had a place to share all the pictures I love to take.  It really has been the most fun.  In 2011 I would like to become more intentional about posting regularly and even adding some scheduled posts – like wardrobe photos, book and music recommendations, recipes, travel tips, interviews with people who inspire me, more focus on photography, etc.  I’m looking forward to it!

So that’s it! Short and sweet.  What are your resolutions for the new year?  Good luck!!!

So…I Have An Announcement

December 23, 2010

I’ve been going back and forth in my mind for a while now about getting a part-time gig for a little extra money.  However, I didn’t want to work just anywhere.  I’m so darn busy that I wanted it to be a place I enjoy….and that stirs my creativity.  Basically I wanted a part-time job that would serve more as a hobby than viewing it only as work.

 (I’m not quitting my job at Women of Faith…no way, man!! I love it there WAY too much! Now that that’s settled…..)

Aaaaaanyways….the other day I was floating about the Shops At Legacy (an adorable shopping center SUPER close to my apartment and office) and saw they were putting in a brand new URBAN OUTFITTERS! Let me just say that I’m in love with the clothes, style, and culture of the good ole UO.  Pretty clothes, new friends, opening a brand new store, discount on dresses AND a place that inspires.

So…I applied…I interviewed…I start in two weeks.  Hooray! It’s a small victory but I’m excited about it.  Yes, I really am.  So come say hello! We’ll open in a few short weeks.

Long December {playlist XII}

December 22, 2010

Merry Christmas! I made you another playlist.  Really it’s a selfish present because it’s full of music that I like.  Well….try to look past that and enjoy it anyway.  I hope you do.  (Disclaimer: after listening you may think that this playlist is full of songs about missing somebody, which  may cause you to believe that’s what I’m going through at the moment.  Maybe I am but maybe I’m not…..or maybe I am.  That’s all I’ve got to say about that.  Enjoy!!)

CS Lewis Is My Hero

December 20, 2010

{We Heart It}

Sometimes there are authors you run across who seem to speak right into your soul with every word you read.  CS Lewis does this for me.  The man had a creative, beautiful and awe inspiring imagination as well as a profound view of God.  I wanted to share a few of my favorite Lewis quotes because his words have changed my life.  Words are powerful, ya know?

A man can no more diminish God’s glory by refusing to worship Him than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word, ‘darkness’ on the walls of his cell.
–CS Lewis
Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither.
CS Lewis
Literature adds to reality, it does not simply describe it. It enriches the necessary competencies that daily life requires and provides; and in this respect, it irrigates the deserts that our lives have already become.
–CS Lewis
You don’t have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body.
–CS Lewis
Some day you will be old enough to start reading fairy tales again.
CS Lewis
We live, in fact, in a world starved for solitude, silence, and private: and therefore starved for meditation and true friendship.
–CS Lewis
Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness.
–CS Lewis
It was when I was happiest that I longed most…The sweetest thing in all my life has been the longing…to find the place where all the beauty came from.
–CS Lewis
Oh goodness….beauty and truth with every thought he chose to share with the world.  I love it.  Want some of his books?  Easy…go here.

December 15, 2010

Like I mentioned earlier, I went to an 80’s themed roller skating party last weekend and had an absolute blast.  Did anybody else spend a huge chunk of their childhood at the local skating ring?  That’s the first place I ever heard ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ and where I learned that it was awesome to skate faster than the boys.  So great.

{we won the costume contest!}

{Leslie, myself and the glorious birthday cake}

{yes, I had all of this in my closet already}

{my pretty little friends}

{oh just the most awesome party favors ever}

{gorgrous sunset leaving the skating rink…it’s pretty fun to type skating rink}

Yes, one of the best birthday parties ever!!

whoa whoa WHOA!!

December 14, 2010

Seriously, where does the time go? And who is in charge of making the days FLY BY during the holidays? I would prefer more of a snail’s pace to fully soak in the beauty of the season but let’s get real….that isn’t happening.

{i love Christmas}

I guess I should probably share what’s been keeping me entirely busy the past week.  Hold on…it’s fast and furious and you’ll probably need a nap after reading/viewing/seeing.  Merry merry Christmas-time!!

{i received the most beautiful package from my dear friend, Carli.  she handmade pretty much everything!! check out her beautiful work here.}

{a Christmas lollipop from my secret santa and a shirt i got from the lovely Red Velvet girls}

{my dear friend Hanna won tickets for us to see the grinch! it was fantastic and so is she.}

{a special grinch drink aptly named ‘the green meanie’.}

{the winspear opera house…where we watched the grinch.}

{my pretty new turquoise wall that i’m in love with.}

{many coffee dates….}

{…with good friends like Rand.}

{got a pretty shower curtain in the mail from UO…swoon.  i had the other one for ten years.  the leopard had to go!}

{more coffee.}

{spent a few nights at home listening to my newest records.  currently spinning MGMT.}

{Christmas parties and Christmas lights with some of my favorite people.}

{the battle with my shower curtain…i won.}

{an 80’s themed skating party.

{more pictures of the skate party coming later…they’re pretty special.}

{cookies i made for the nursing home down the street from my apartment.  i will do this more often.  it gave me such joy to deliver them and see how happy they were from something as simple as chocolate chip cookies.  find a way to serve others….it’s one of the truest joys life can offer.}

{craft fair and a mustache….clearly.}

{spent a perfect afternoon at the craft fair with Courtney.  she is good for my heart and my soul.}

{i’m sure i drove Courtney mad snapping pics but i-just-can’t-stop!!}

{all of the shops decorated their store fronts according to their favorite Christmas movie…..adorable.}

{spent another magical evening with the lovely Luci Swindoll and Nicole.  these moments are priceless to me.  i love sitting with Luci and listening to her talk about life and impart wisdom that is worth more than gold.  i wouldn’t trade these times for anything.  she talks about her love for Jesus and how He has worked in her life for 78 years….it’s amazing and i’m thankful for her friendship.}

{warm and cozy christmas decor! i’m keeping mine up until it’s not cold anymore.  oh, i’ll do it.}

Phew…that was fun.  I forget how much I enjoy blogging when I go a few days without it.  Isn’t it strange how we so easily forget the things we enjoy?  I will never fully get life….but I guess we aren’t supposed to, yet.

Oh, I will also say that I’m now COMPLETELY HOOKED on instagram.  It’s much like Twitter but with pictures.  Plus, the community it’s built around is wonderful and addicting and so much fun.  Are you an instagrammer? If so….find me @laura_elizabeth.

Gotta run! It’s ladies night and that means trouble. *wink*
